He looks up from his notes and say s ‘I am sorry, but you have peritoneal cancer ‘.  Those words cut you thr u to the core.  You wonder if he is talking about you, as he is looks directly into your eyes, the words glide from his mouth.  It, somehow, doesn’t seem real.  You could have heard the word mesothelioma but he might have been chatt ing ga ga as far as you are concerned.  You do n’t know much, yet, but analyze further.  No one told you about nanoparticles or mesothelioma, did they?  

Mesothelioma cancer is due to asbestos inhalation or, most like ly, thr u some kind of inges tion, although the latter is no t known for sure.  It can present itself in 2 ways : the swelling of the stomach lining and / or thr u the lin ing of the lungs and could have taken 25 thirty years to develop.  

It ‘s an incurable cancer that will have deriv ed from working in a n industry where asbestos was widely used, particular ly in building.  This sort of cancer is unusual in the lungs and rarer in the peritoneum.  The super-fine fibres of the asbestos particles appear to act as a foreign body which irritates the lin ing of the lungs and peritoneum the body can not absorb or clear the area.  This then causes the cancer to develop over a period.  

Mesothelioma of the lungs, it is thought, develops thr ough breathing in the asbestos particles, wh ereas, peritoneal cancer appear s to develop thr u inges tion of comestible s.  It is thought that its development is a bi-product of washing asbestos infected clothing and, somehow, gets transferred into the digestive system, maybe thr ough handling washing, for exampl e.  Mesothelioma of the lungs appear s to affect th e ones that ha ve ha d close contact, wh ile mesothelioma of the peritoneum appear s to be indirect.  Nevertheless as a secondary, the influenc ed lung cancer can spread to the stomach causing secondary peritoneal cancer.  

Peritoneal cancer is hard to diagnose, but when this is formalised, can already be too late.  It can present itself likewise to ovarian cancer in ladies, another cancer that seem s to be incurable, with abdom inal swelling, nausea and bloating.  

Both form s of mesothelioma, pleura cancer and peritoneal cancer, affect the lining.  This lining covers the abdomen and lung walls.  It is thick with mesothelial cells, blood vessel s and lymphatic network.  The lin er of the combination s of these materials also covers the organs, making ease of movement.  It is with in the mass of lymph networks that liq uid collects.  

To analyze cancer of this sort can be troublesome as it is extraordinaril y rare.  Nevertheless with the discovery of nanoparticles in the nanotechnology school s, there are developments that create intelligent artificial cells that may attack directly areas of swelling s.  This research will be trialing s hortly, which offers hope to several’incurable’ cancer conditions.  

The researcher s suggest that nanoparticle technology could most likely help folk with inoperable and difficult cancers.  Cancers that are inoperable because they ‘re close to vital organs, for instanc e.

Dr Lesley Walker on nanoparticle research and technology, from the charity Cancer Research UK, said: “These results are encouraging, and we look forward to seeing if this method can be used to treat cancer in people.  

“Gene therapy is an exciting area of research, but targeting genetic changes to cancer cells has been a major challenge.

It might be that through nanoparticles, mesothelioma of the lungs and peritoneal cancers may become a thing of the past.  These encrusted gold nanoparticles could be instructed to invade an affected cancerous area and leave a toxic trail of radiation; thereby killing the cancer but leaving the good tissue in tact.  This is presently fantasy but, the evidence suggests, could well become fact.
