Alpha lipoic acid(ALA) is more than an antioxidant it is a very versatile super antioxidant because it can cross the brain blood barrier and protect the brain against free radical damage. There are few antioxidants that can do this. Further more it is one of the few antioxidants that is both water soluble and oil soluble and this allows for better absorption into the cells. As ALA production decreases the actual need increases.
The need for alpha lipoic acid becomes even greater for those with insulin resistance or diabetes. Research findings show alpha lipoic acid’s has the potential to control blood sugar and prevent diabetic complications, particularly diabetic neuropathy. This protocol has been used in Europe for many years with great success.
A friend who was recently diagnosed with Type II Diabetes had the symptoms of tingling, burning, numbness and pain in the feet and toes. This is what doctors call peripheral neuropathy or diabetic neuropathy. After taking ALA for just two weeks the symptoms started to recede and after a month were almost gone. She continues to take ALA at this time. She takes 300mg twice a day with meals.
Alpha-lipoic acid works together with other antioxidants such as vitamins C and E. It is important for growth, helps to prevent cell damage, and helps the body rid itself of harmful substances. Alpha lipoic acid has been found to be a possible mercury detoxification agent. This may be particularly important to Alzheimer’s patient since mercury may be a cause of this disease.
Other studies have shown that alpha-lipoic acid speeds the removal of glucose (sugar) from the blood of people with diabetes and that this antioxidant may prevent kidney damage associated with diabetes in animals.
The first human clinical studies using alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) in the United States showed when they administered ALA intravenously to 79 people with acute and severe liver damage 75 recovered full liver function. The researchers were appointed by the FDA as principal investigators for this therapeutic agent as an investigational drug and they went on to use it successfully for the treatment of chronic liver disease (viral hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, etc.
Alpha-lipoic acid can easily cross the blood brain barrier and has protective effects on brain and nerve tissue and shows promise as a treatment for stroke and other brain disorders involving free radical damage. Animals treated with alpha-lipoic acid, for example, suffered less brain damage and had a four times greater survival rate after a stroke than the animals who did not receive this supplement.
ALA has few dietary sources. It is available from spinach, broccoli, beef, yeast (particularly Brewer’s yeast), and certain organ meats like kidney and heart.
