Mangosteen has been the word in the antioxidant arena for quite some time because of the xanthone flavonoids and other compounds found in the fruit. The xanthone flavonoids and other compounds are responsible for its high level of antioxidant activity. In vitro tests have been conducted on Mangosteen extract to determine the level of free radical scavenging ability. This is a test recognized as the industry standard for measuring antioxidant activity. It is called the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) assay.
The total ORAC value provides a relative measure of total antioxidant activity of food, allowing for comparison of different foods or different nutritional compounds. A high ORAC value corresponds to a high total antioxidant capacity.
Mangosteen has not yet been tested by the USDA (early 2010) but has been tested in some independent products. It seems to have a rather high value of 3500 units in 10% extract. This result is considered high and that is why we put mangosteen in our antioxidant drink.
Mangosteen is a potentially rich source of beneficial antioxidants to the body. Like other fruits high in flavonoids it has many of the same benefits and offers a good alternative to eat alone or in combination with other foods.
